About PILAS

PILAS (Postgraduates in Latin American Studies) is the postgraduate affiliate of the Society for Latin American Studies (SLAS).

We are a community of postgraduate researchers whose work engages with Latin America across disciplines and institutions. Based in the United Kingdom and connected to researchers internationally, PILAS is dedicated to creating opportunities for postgraduate students to connect, collaborate, share research, and support one another throughout their academic journeys.

What We Do

PILAS works to strengthen the postgraduate Latin American Studies community by:

  • Representing postgraduate interests within SLAS.

  • Creating opportunities for networking and collaboration.

  • Sharing calls for papers, events, funding opportunities, and research initiatives.

  • Organising workshops, writing sessions, and professional development activities.

  • Hosting the annual PILAS Conference, a space for postgraduate researchers to present their work and engage with peers from across the field.

Join the Community

All student members of SLAS automatically become members of PILAS.

Throughout the year, PILAS provides spaces for postgraduate researchers to exchange ideas, develop skills, discuss challenges, and build connections with fellow scholars working on Latin America.
